About Figmunds

Figmunds were creat...*ahem*...re-discovered by, writer and illustrator, J. M. DeSantis sometime before the turn of the millenium. We say "re-discovered" because we know that Figmunds were originally discovered long ago when the world was still very young and all manner of fantastic creatures walked the Earth.

Figmunds were a curious and wonderful people. They were very small, perhaps only two or three feet tall at most, with large, dark eyes, fur covering their body, whiskers, and a tuft of longer hair growing right off the front-top of their heads which they wore in styles of all sorts and lengths. The color of their fur varied from Figmund to Figmund. These colors resembled the more common tones of animal fur (grey, brown, white, black, etc.). However, their tufts of hair were more like the hair of Men (humans), and so these colors more closely matched human hair. In very few cases were Figmunds born with marks (like spots or stripes), and for a very long time it was considered unwanted to have such marks, that is until one young Figgling made his mark among the Figmunds and, later, the world around them. But that tale should be left for another time place and time...

Figmunds were good natured, yet often quiet and inhibited outsite their small world. Though there were a few Figmunds that became well known in the world at large. In general, Figmunds loved the simple things in life, caring for their familes and homes, and putting them above all else. However they were facinated by the stories of adventure, romance, and mystery the other races of the world brought with them when they came across the sea to the Figmunds' homeland. Very few of Figmunds took part in such grand adventures themselves, though that is not to say Figmund life was unexciting at all.

Figmund History and Their Origins

Where Figmunds originated from, no one is entirely certain, and the Figmund histories say very little about this. It's the belief of many, however, that long before their discovery they evolved from the rabbits that lived in the forests of their native land. Whether this theory is true or not is yet to be determined.

What is known is that after the Great Battles, many among the races of the world looked west again in hopes of discovering new or forgotten lands where they wished to establish new realms. Among these were the Sea Elves. In their travels, they came upon a forest with trees of an uncanny height, and so they named the forest Lindor (Tall Wood). It was in this forest that the Figmunds lived in seclusion, unaware of the rest of the world.

At the time when the Sea Elves came, Figmunds didn't wear any clothing (they had fur to cover their entire body, after all) and their homes were relatively simple, more like rabbit-holes than houses. It was not until they met the race of Men shortly after the Sea Elves that Figmunds adopted their more well-known appearance of wearing simple clothing (some wore shoes, but it was not common) and building homes that were reminiscent of what we might consider proper houses. Although Figmunds adored the Elves, they seemed to have a special facination with Men and their ways.

Since their discovery, the Figmunds lived in peace with the Sea Elves, who alone lived among with them in Lindor (to the north of the Figmund villages) until war came to that peaceful place. At that time the Figmunds fought one of their only battles to defend their homes. Yet, when evil was banished from their homeland, so much of the forest had been ruined that the Sea Elves left to build new homes further west by the sea shores. Only a few of the Elves remained in Lindor, though they stayed friends with the Figmunds forever.

After that, the Figmunds continued to live a relatively undisturbed life. It was during these long years that the world continued to change and two Figmunds in particular went out and lived the adventures so many of their people were content to hear about. But those tales are better left for another time.

When many ages had passed, and the world had changed enough, Figmunds finally passed into obscurity and disappeared from history. It's for this reason (and because no living Figmund has been seen in many ages) that most historians consider them to be extinct.

Figmund Architecture

Figmund architecture is a very interesting area of study and deserves its own section. As stated, Figmunds originally lived in simple holes like a rabbit's. However, after coming into contact with Men, the Figmund race as a whole took on new habits, including changing their homes from mere holes into more sophisticated living-quarters.

Though Figmunds still dug holes in the ground, they fortified the insides of these with all sorts of decorative and supportive structures, but what was most curious of all was the outside of their homes. Rather than mere holes in the grass, they began to fashion their entrance ways from tree-stumps. The Figmunds hollowed out these stumps, creating a foyer and coat room (for non-Figmund guests, who were common enough, especially when the Sea Elves lived nearby). Because of this, they would only choose the largest tree-stumps (not too hard to find in the Tall Wood).

The stumps were fashioned with windows (one or two) and a large door, while the tops of the stumps were piled high with hay, twigs, and all manner of things to create a solid roof. Once inside, there would be a hole (usually in the middle of the room) with a ladder or stairs leading down into the main home.

Figmund Diet

By all accounts Figmunds were strict vegetarians. They never ate meat of any kind, though they were known to eat and drink certain products of other animals (providing no part of the animal was used to make the product), such as milk, honey, and the like. (Figmunds were particularly fond of cheeses of all sorts.) Their reason for such a diet was more from biology than an actual aversion to eating meat (though, most historians are certain Figmunds would have little to no interest in eating meat given the chance). As it was, Figmunds were likely descended from animals such as rabbits, and so their dietary habits closely resemble those (with some additional human aspects).
